Last week I had the pleasure of visiting the KX Akademy and training their racing drivers in how to use social media to build a personal brand. Mentored by British Touring Car legend Jason Plato (pictured in second photo below, middle), these young drivers are learning from the best, and judging from their finish line positions it’s paying off.
Their big challenge of course is attracting sponsors so that they can afford to race, and this is where building large, engaged fanbases becomes a crucial part of their career, aside from results on the racetrack. During the day we worked through how various platforms can be used differently and how we can be power users of each, how other sportspersons have achieved success in social media, how the drivers can learn from their audience to optimise their activity, what monetisation opportunities exist and finally how social media advertising and analytics work.
Quite a day, and yes, some cans of KX were consumed!
