Wondering what happened to UrbanChat?
In this article, we will be talking about everything you need to know about the social networking site Urban Chat – “Where The Streets Are Talking”.
What was UrbanChat?
In 2005, a new social networking site was introduced that gained many users. This website called “UrbanChat” focused on connecting with users from all walks of life and learning about issues that were going on in their city. The website consisted of three main features: a messaging system, instant messenger, and community forums.
Users who signed up for an account would have been able to connect with others from around the world who shared similar interests. People could share stories, learn more about one another’s culture, or just use it as a simple messaging system.
One of the most unique aspects of UrbanChat was its exclusive list of celebrities known as “Urban Elite.” The list included rappers, singers, actors, and other well-known figures within the urban community.
In addition to its messaging system, UrbanChat also had a similar version of instant messenger. This allowed users to connect through voice or text message.
Finally, UrbanChat featured a series of popular community forums for users to interact in. These were called “ShoutOuts” and were focused around a specific topic. These topics ranged from current events, music & entertainment, relationships & dating, sports & recreation etc. Community members could use these forums as either an outlet for their opinion on various topics or as a way to learn about new issues.
What happened to UrbanChat.com?
UrbanChat was founded in 2003 by four African American internet entrepreneurs. They saw that there was a lack of community focused websites, which focused on the urban experience. At one point UrbanChat had thousands of users daily but unfortunately since it’s peak, user activity has declined drastically. The reasons behind this are unclear though some have speculated that it due to issues with security or hacking, while others have said that it is merely due to its age. Urban chat currently remains offline no word on when or if ever it will return to service.
The facts about what happened to UrbanChat are unclear but for years users flocked to the service craving an outlet where they can express their opinion on important issues. Unfortunately, evidence shows that since then more social networks have emerged in the online world, so this may have also contributed to its decline.
Another contributing factor is that it has become clear that UrbanChat was losing money for years, even when it gained popularity. This makes it hard to determine whether or not they simply ran out of funds and were forced offline or if their plan was never meant to be long term.
