This morning I joined the team on ITV’s Good Morning Britain along with Nadine Dorries MP and Michelle Mone OBE to discuss the dangers of online trolls and what victims can do.
The first piece asked Nadine, who has herself been trolled online, to comment on what needs to be done, before turning to me for a view on how we define ‘trolls’ and what victims can do.
In the second piece I was also joined by Michelle Mone OBE, who was the subject of a torrent of abuse after she declared her support for the “no” vote in the recent Scottish referendum for independence. We discussed the ways in which victims can report abuse but also questioned how effective those channels are.
Overall, the advice we would give to an individual receiving abusive messages online is 1. don’t respond and 2. report it through the website, and if you feel it’s serious the police. Twitter’s resources for help on this subject are located here, whilst Facebook’s are here.
