1 – Yahoo to Axe 2,000 jobs

Internet giant Yahoo announced this week that they’ll be letting 2,000 of their 14,000 strong workforce go as they plan to restructure for the future. Hopefully this news will follow what will be a promising plan for how Yahoo can recapture some of its former glory and become a key destination on the internet.

2 – Instagram comes to Android

Good news for Android users and cue the Apple fan-boy back-lash – popular photo-sharing social network Instagram launched on Android this week and promptly racked up over 1million downloads in 24 hours. Good things come to those who wait.

3 – Vevo Announces Annual growth of 23%

Vevo, the online music video service, announces that their streaming numbers have increased by 120% since their launch one year ago culminating in 177 million streams in January 2012.

4 – Skype’s new ad campaign

Skype have unveiled a new $12m marketing campaign and the ‘gloves are off’ when it comes to Facebook and Twitter. The ad-creative includes the lines: “Upgrade from a wall post to a first class conversation” and “140 characters doesn’t equal staying in touch”.

5 – Obama Joins Pinterest

The official Barack Obama Pinterest page was set up a couple of weeks ago but confirmed this week. Even Barack can’t ignore the rising popularity of Pinterest, and so far the Obama campaign has racked up more than 11,500 followers and has pinned 81 images.
