Ellen Creates Most Retweeted Photo Ever at #Oscars2014

Gravity, 12 Years a Slave and Dallas Buyers Club triumphed at last night’s Oscars but the big winner in social was the host Ellen DeGeneres whose group selfie with her A-list mates became the most retweeted photo in Twitter’s 8-year history. Currently standing at 2.5 million, it beats the previous record – Barack Obama’s photo on winning a second term in office – by some way. Ellen orchestrated the moment during the show and openly uses a Samsung Galaxy Note 3, which if provided by Samsung as part of Twitter Amplify is a genius bit of product placement.

 Zuckerberg at Mobile World Congress

The Facebook co-founder and CEO explained the WhatsApp acquisition at MWC in Barcelona last week, saying that “[WhatsApp is] the most engaging app that we’ve ever seen that exists on mobile by far”. He announced that a voice-calling feature will launch soon and that the service is on course to connecting one billion people around the world. The 29-year-old billionaire went on to discuss a potential SnapChat acquisition batting away rumours by saying “After buying a company for $16bn, you are probably done for a while”. Fair point, though we wouldn’t rule anything out as Facebook aims to connect every last person on the planet.

Twitter has been spending February inviting brands and agencies to its pop-up studio to help them plan activity on the site. The UK team are hoping to aid brands here to match the success seen in the US (e.g. Oreo’s ‘dunking in the dark’ Super Bowl moment) and have been working with Samsung, Paddy Power and Adidas to solve briefs.

Bebo – the social network for younger teens which peaked in popularity in 2008, particularly in the UK and Ireland are currently closed in preparation for a creative overhaul and relaunch by its original founders. Ahead of this they have launched a ‘video walkie talkie’ app which allows users to send destructible messages to friends, whether they have the app installed or not.
