How to create awesome blurred backgrounds is something everyone should know, why? Because they look damn cool!

This is a really simple and quick tutorial which only takes a few seconds to do. I’ve included a freebie PSD where you can drop an image in and it will change automatically.

Step 1 – Get a cool photo

To start click File>New to bring up your new PSD file. I’ve set my dimensions to 800px by 600px at 72px Resolution.

Find an image that is full of vibrant colours, these always look the best when blurred. Click File>Place and select your image from the finder window. This will drop the image onto the canvas.

Step 2 – Smart Filters

Select your image within the layers panel, now click Filter>Convert for Smart Filters. We can now add Filters to the layer which we can adjust instead of adding a filter directly to the layer which will permanently change it.

Step 3 – Blur!

Keeping the image layer selected, click Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. I’ve set the blur to about 40px but you can play around with it until it looks good.

And that’s that! Got yourself an awesome blurred background.

We had some great responses from our last few tutorials so just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone for all your feedback. Hope you’ve enjoyed this tutorial and stay tuned!
