Seminal London-based band The xx have recently released Coexist the follow-up to their Mercury Prize-winning debut album xx. In promotion of the release they have allowed fans to stream the album online through a stunning interactive data visualisation, created in conjunction with Internet Explorer, where fans can view where other fans are also streaming the album across the world.

xx Coexist Album Stream Data Visualisation

As you start to stream the album, the application takes IP location data from a listener to pinpoint you on the map (with an X naturally), and then location points are joined up across the global map representing how the stream has been shared across the world (highlighting the band’s global audience) either via Twitter, Facebook or email taking the location of the new listener as the end point.

This is a very cool slice of creative technology that’s simple, effective and breathes new life into the traditional album stream. And the album is pretty good too.

Head to the band’s site to see it in full glory, or listen to the album with the embed below.
